  • Advice for the Free Build

Given how many other things we discuss, I was surprised to see there wasn't much organized discussion of or advice for a free player of Underworld Empire. I'm not starting the thread as a response to anything past or present or as an opportunity to discuss things outside the realm of advice. Please keep in mind that your audience will be those players who cannot or will not be spending money on UE. We as a community have a chance to leave a helpful and practical thread on ways to successfully play as a free player. This will help those who maintain that type of account throughout their UE experience as well as those who may at times find themselves in that model of gameplay. The forums can and should be a great resource for many types of players. Let's keep it clean, positive and as a guide please? I can't pretend to know everything and hope that others will help contribute as possible.

Please feel free to give anecdotal examples (I'll start us off), advice, observations, etc. etc.

Re: Advice for the Free Build

Full disclosure, I have a "main" account that I put most of my time and effort in that I do spend on. I would count that account as a low to modest spender but it has certainly been fun and I will continue to buy refills and promos for it. This thread is in no way an effort to invalidate the multitude of build types available or any player's spending preferences.

So my alt is a Free Build which means I have not and never will spend on it. I thought I'd share a bit of my experiences with that type of build in the hopes of inspiring further conversations/advice for players that come to the forums looking for advice. These are just my experiences though, we have folks around here with other equally helpful insight and it is worth getting lots of advice and doing a lot of planning for any account but especially for truly free ones.

    In the beginning...
So "DiscountAlt" began as a pure LSI which means I only invested stat points into energy and stamina. I did this because the build was interesting to explore and I knew it would make leveling a lot easier (and fun!). I stockpiled refills and FP at first because I didn't need them to be honest - the leveling refill kept things going pretty well. I worked on 5-starring jobs for SP and secret jobs for crates. Achievements will give you some FP and there's the regular 3 from the daily login, some bosses will also give you an FP point. Daily scratchers also yielded some occasional goodies (surprisingly better luck than my other account...)

    Events
With all of the Events "BargainBuild" participated in, it was usually possible to do enough to get the low end gifts for free. This meant crate rolls, some refills, some scratchers, sometimes an LT. MMB is the best naturally but it's possible to get useful loot out of the other types as well. Just actively participate and have fun with it because there is no pressure to attempt the Event LT. At one point the account had enough refills to possibly attempt it but I got distracted (true story).

    PvP and Bosses
PvP can be easier with refills but the daily regenerated stamina allows a free player to hit 200+ times a day which is nice for steady progress. Given the build type, the account was usually drafted into bosses that needed a push. Now that "UnpaidIntern" is at the 2k/1k mark, I have started adding to attack and defense and will potentially work on that BR, maybe. Unless there is a slow moving boss (shout-out to the Line group), I will occasionally just let the stamina fill over a couple days before dropping it all on one boss in order to get to those thresholds.

    EvE and Classes

It's hard to spend on EvE directly so "FreeRide" can still be a meaningful asset to our empire. For those curious, it is a HW class and will not be upgrading to the extension. Even if the account progresses slower or is weaker than some, being an active and positive member of your empire can do wonders.

    Misc
"GratuitousFreeloader" is only concerned about income-generating properties and has purchased them accordingly besides those needed for further Fortresses. The account is weak in LTs but close to starting the dice job grinding. Tech lab items/achievements are slowly coming along. Shop items are slowly accruing as well as insignias/alloy. I've made good use of the forums and wiki to find information and plan for the future development of the account - do some pre-emptive planning fellow 501(c)3-players!

So it's not a comprehensive, all-inclusive description or guide but hopefully gives an idea of 1 way to go about it as a way to get things started.

Please feel free to ask questions below and anyone that can help give advice or personal experience or alternate methods please do so!

Re: Advice for the Free Build

Best advice for free build is to buy Itunes card when on sale. And have that $20 in your account on standby. I know it goes against everything this thread about. But $20 promo will only be $16. And like last Summerwave promo. You get free LT, property and bunch of other stuff. The rest of time you can go into free player mode.

Re: Advice for the Free Build

So this is probly a thread I would have liked to have seen a over a year ago. I am a free player. (I spent one time but that was a $20 iTunes card I was never using from Christmas, but haven't spent anything since. So that one time in over a year. It got me my 3 star Brutus).

The advice I am going to give on the topics below are based on MY opinions and MY character. It may or may not work for you. I am also by no means an expert. I still have tons of learning left to do, so take the advice however you want to. I will be speaking based on my LSI enforcer EVE-only build.

          CLASS
This is entirely up to you. Each class has its own play style and honestly, you can play whatever class you want to and how you want to. What may work for you may not work for someone else and vise versa. Choosing a class has nothing to do spending or not spending.

          BUILD
I chose to go with an LSI build because I wanted to see progress quickly. I am giving up stats (kill/death ratio) and strength for the purpose of leveling fast. Especially since I wasnt spending anything, I really wanted to see those levels rise seeing level 1k+ out there. Now being LSI, I am weak, but since I chose to be an EVE-only build, makes things a lot easier. I dont have to worry about stats or Battle Rank. I just focus on maxing out my class skills and as long as I am attending EVE, I am getting Class coins. Always progressing in some way. Since I have my energy at 2k and Stamina at 601, I can focus on my defense and health, making me stronger over time, but that will take some time. That is were PATIENCE comes in because I am not paying to progess to that point faster.

          FAVOR POINTS (FP)
save, save, and save some more. Since I am not spending, I am lacking in refills, crate rolls, and black market Lieutenants(Lts). Unless there is an event happening that will reward refills, I wont use FP on refills. I am already leveling faster than a lot of other players so I am not to worried about them. If an event has refills, I will only spend FP on refills to the amount that I would get back. Basically getting back what I spent. If there is no event, I will save FP for either black market Lts or crate rolls. I have had no luck with any good lts from crate rolls so I just save them for good black market ones.

          GOALS
Have a set of goals in mind. Having them will make your non-spending time a lot easier, because you will see people below you at some point flying past you as they spend their money to progress. It will bum you out (it made me not want to play), but keep those goals in mind and achieve them. Currently my goals are to reach 1k in level, max out enforcer, and be a token eater in EVE. I am currently level 559, almost maxed out enforcer, 3 skills left to max out, and becoming better and better in EVE. They are all long term goals that may take some time, so develop some short term goals that will keep you playing. Mine are to complete the achievements (daily and normal ones), level up the next skill, level up (1 day at a time), and collect Lts from dice jobs.

The best advice I can give to anyone that wants to play for free is to have PATIENCE. It may take you a lot longer to achieve certain results compared to someone that spends to get there tomorrow. They may have a lot of things that you dont. Lastly, dont let anyone tell you that you have to spend in order to compete in UE and dont let anyone tell you what you are doing is wrong.

          See you out there!

Re: Advice for the Free Build

I have a main account which is 913 and the second account is in the middle level 500's and the 2nd i've not spent a single penny on it, 2000 energy and currently 715 stamina currently allows me to do a fair amount without needing any money and Its a heavy for the empire to demo buildings mainly.

One thing I would say for a free player if you can get the 2000 energy really early and a bit of stamina your level ups come fairly quick at lower levels and can be useful in events due to the level up refills in the beginning but eventually when you start getting beyond level 600 plus starts to slow down a lot.

Re: Advice for the Free Build

I have a lot of toons, I have spent a low amount on my main toon and nothing on any of the others.

              BE PATIENT!
I tend to do it on every game I play, I spend the free points you get at the start on wasteful things, stockpile any free FP you get, keep back those refills (on my main I used loads when I had like 200 energy and stamina). Even if you don't want to go full LSI, keep them back for events, you will do so much better if you have 20 stamina/energy refills at the ready, even if you are not going to compete with the big boys (I still cant now), you will hit the top rewards for participation with ease.

If you want to buy crates, save up until you have 80 FP, especially at the start of the game you are constantly earning FP from challenges (and 3FP every 10 days from the daily logins), it is far to tempting to just buy one for 30 FP just because you have it and you think it will benefit you now (when you roll a common or uncommon 9/10 it doesn't seem like such a good idea afterwards). SAVE UP TILL 80, GET THAT 10 FP DISCOUNT!

Keep checking the forums, often some things (classes especially), can seem confusing at first, keep going back and ready here before you make a decision, often after playing a bit longer and reading things again its a lot more clear. When things are few and far between, spending wisely is even more important!

              Happy no spending!
